The sensors involving some digital cameras change in in the area of contrast, while others utilize a beam involving infra-red (IR) light, especially in low light. Higher specs cameras occasionally use a combination of both models and likely have Face Priority AF where the photographic camera can 'See' the face and focus only on that.
