Látszólag igen magabiztosan indul neki az RMDSZ az európai parlamenti választásoknak. A nyitási ígéreteket és látszattárgyalásokat követően összeállította saját listáját, elzárkózott a közös jelöltállítástól. Tőkés László függetlenként való indulása azonban új helyzetet teremt, először kell valós versenyben megmérettetnie magát a szövetségnek. S bár hivatalosan nem ismerik el, ez sokakat zavar és aggaszt.

Kifelé erőt sugároznak az RMDSZ vezetőinek nyilatkozatai, ám a háttérben már nem ennyire nyugodtak. A parlamenti frakciók szerdai együttes ülésén Verestóy Attila szenátor határozottan fogalmazott: ha Tőkésnek sikerül összegyűjtenie az induláshoz szükséges 100.000 aláírást, az RMDSZ elveszett.

„Csírájában kell elfojtani a próbálkozást” – mondotta, s kijelentésén nem kell meglepődnünk, 2004-ben az RMDSZ-nek sikerült megakadályoznia ellenzéke választásokon való indulását. Nehéz előre megjósolni, most milyen eszközökhöz nyúlnak, de minden jel arra mutat, nem szívesen bíznák a véletlenre, illetve a szavazópolgárokra a májusi voksolás kimenetelét.
